Great Lakes Academy
Curriculum

The Standards-Based Curriculum of Great Lakes Academy, as one of the essential elements of our school design, provides a framework for delivering what students should know and be able to do in the core subjects at each grade level. The following features of our school design provide a consistent way to implement our model, strengthen our commitment to providing a world-class education to every student, and place GLA at the forefront of NCLB legislation.

We emphasize literacy by presenting an enhanced school day that contains a core and an encore of subjects. The core subjects consist of reading and language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies with dedicated periods of instructional time. Student’s time-on-task in all core subjects is enhanced through the use of the computer lab and stations utilizing a comprehensive software system. The software provides students with direct instruction and learning strategies that address specific learning styles and increase academic success.

Encore subjects at Great Lakes Academy provide enriching experiences that broaden horizons, allow exploration of new experiences, and deepen preparation for becoming life-long learners. We believe that these experiences are integral to the development of well-rounded students who develop practical arts skills and an appreciation of universal ideas.
